Pat and Paddy
Paddy O'Brien and Pat Egan
7 p.m.  at Orr Street Studios, 106 Orr St.
$12 adults, $10 seniors and students, kids  14 & under attend free

Welcome back Paddy and Pat, two members of traditional band "Chulrua," who have performed in Columbia many times over the years.  Paddy O'Brien is considered one of the finest box players and a treasured source of tune knowledge.  He has published two volumes of 500 tunes each with recordings and sheet music, including many regional variations of well-known tunes.  This huge effort is a gift to Irish traditional music as significant as Chief O'Neill's collection.

Pat Egan is a lovely singer and versatile guitar player who complements Paddy's melodic tunes with the deftness that comes from playing with someone for many years.

Concert with Julie Henigan, traditional singer and multi-instrumentalist
Followed by a ceili dance and dessert potluck at 8:30 pm.   Coffee and other beverages provided.
Unity Center of Columbia, 1600 W. Broadway

Julie Henigan
Traditional singer, musician and folklorist from Springfield, MO.  Julie’s avid interest in the folk music of Ireland, Scotland and England and the music of the Ozarks come together in her repertoire of songs and tunes exhibiting the immigrant connection between the folk traditions.

Julie will perform a concert of traditional Irish songs and tunes, focusing on the themes of migration and emigration.  She will complement her Irish material with American (and in some cases Missouri) counterparts, illustrating the impact Irish music and song has had on our own tradition.  The concert will feature Julie singing, both accompanied and unaccompanied in English and Irish Gaelic, and playing the guitar, fiddle, and five-string banjo.

After the concert we’ll have a dessert potluck and Irish folk dancing for everyone and with local musicians playing for the dancing.

LAST Concert of the season!

Sunday, May 4, 2008   7:30 p.m.

Bua

Brian Hart, Jackie Moran, Chris Bain, Sean Gavin, & Brian Miller

A quintet comprised of some of America’s most talented, young musicians, Bua have been described by Irish Music Magazine as “the essence of a superb band,” their sound “a throwback to the playing of the 1960s and 1970s, keeping the music down the path of tradition” and their 2006 release, Live at Martyrs’, “a work without gimmicks, where the musicianship is of the highest quality.” It is no surprise then that Bua, lending to its Irish Gaelic meaning of ‘innate gift,’ have quickly risen to the status of America’s premier traditional Irish music ensemble.  more info...

Ahh... what a treat and a privilege it was to have Len here in Columbia for a few days.   The concert at Unity was under-attended, but a rare, fine evening for those who braved the rain.  Len also made appearances at Lee Elementary, Columbia Independent School, and Grant Elementary, receiving warm welcomes and praise from students and teachers.  His appearance at The Big Muddy was also great fun. He set the tone for the evening with unaccompanied songs -- they seemed to be the theme of the night, with Leela Grace, Dave Para and David Grimes all contributing unaccompanied songs, too. A great night.   Thanks for visiting, Len!

Wow! this was an excellent, wonderful, fantastic concert! Watching Paul and Manus' playing is auditory Olympic ice dancing... how do they make it look/sound so easy and so beautiful? Enda must have an extra set of hands hidden there somewhere, given the impossible things he can do on banjo. Denis glued it all together with enviable alacrity. I hope they pass this way again some time!

Andy Irvine
March 19 & 20, 2003

Well, war broke out on Wednesday, March 19 and Thursday was a day of peace protests and news-watching. Andy played his concert anyway, opening with "When the Boys are on Parade." Attendance was predictably low, but those who did attend had a great time.

Thursday afternoon, Andy gave a talk and sang some songs for the MU history department, focusing on several of his own heroes of Irish history, and a few immigration songs.

Wednesday evening he gave a song workshop, teaching several songs he learned from northern

Wow! Oísin, Sean, John and Paul (who is filling in for Tristan on this tour) turned in an excellent performance Sunday evening in Columbia. traditional Irish musicians, guitar, flute and vocals
Cherry Street Artisan, 8 p.m. $5

Bernie McDonald, host of the "Ireland in America" radio show on KDHX St. Louis, is a self-taught, finger-style guitarist, composer and singer.  Barbara McDonald has been playing flute since she was seven years old, and has performed with Bernie since the early 80's. Together they perform traditional dance tunes and songs, and are particularly well known for their lovely styling of the tunes of the 17th century blind Irish harper, Turlough Carolan.

Give them a listen:
Barbara and Bernie play an O'Carolan tune called Loftus
Bernie sings the traditional song "The Trees they Grow High"

You can listen to Bernie's show on www.kdhx.org every Monday.

NavanConcert and harmony singing workshop with Navan
Sunday, October 27: Navan
7:30 p.m., $10 public, $8 members
Sacred Heart Catholic Church (in the sanctuary) corner of Waugh and Locust Streets, near downtown Columbia.  MAP    Printable flyer (PDF)

Navan is an a cappella vocal group who sing in the Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Manx and Breton languages. Choosing a repertoire of seldom-heard songs in seldom-heard languages, Navan offers a sampling of nearly-extinct song traditions. Because the Celtic languages developed as oral languages, with little or no writing until Christian monks began recording the oral histories, these languages have a natural rhythm and poetic quality that is especially evident in the songs.

During their performances, Navan explain the songs and their origins, and often combine different versions of the songs they've researched, sometimes singing in the sean nós solo voice style, but more often adding rich 4-part harmonies that will send chills down your spine!
