Len Graham, traditional singer
A Song-Catcher's Journey

Len GrahamIrish singer Len Graham offers traditional songs in English from the North of Ireland, stitched together with memories from a lifetime of collecting and singing. Len's extensive repertory of songs covers the gamut of themes and human experience as portrayed in the old ballads, local songs, come-all-ye's, lyric folksongs, music hall pieces; songs on politics, murder, love, emigration and more.

Len is one of Ireland's best known traditional singers and song-collectors. He was a member of the band Skylark for many years and his honors include the TG4 National Music Award for Traditional Singer of the Year (2002); Seán O'Boyle Cultural Traditions Award (1992) and All-Ireland champion in traditional singing (1971)

Listen:  Len sings Down the Moor, a live concert cut from "For the Sake of Old Decency," a duet album with Cathal McConnell of The Boys of the Lough.

Note from Kate:

I first heard Len perform in Armagh in 2000 and have been an ardent fan of his singing ever since, and I have developed enormous respect for him as a torch-bearer of the song tradition.   His are "the songs of the people," collected from rural folk across Ulster who sang the songs their parents and grandparents gave them, handed down like precious heirlooms. To them they aren't "traditional songs" or "folk songs", they are just their songs.  Living room, peat fire in the hearth, etc. Len is bringing it to us.

Many familiar names in Celtic music credit Len as a source for their songs on album booklets, but he would be quick to tell you that he just passes the songs along  -- learned from singers like Eddie Butcher, Joe Holmes, and other little-known folk who are sadly gone now.

It's a double pleasure that Len is a highly engaging performer with a vast store of stories and songs. He rarely travels out of Ireland any more, so this is a special opportunity to hear him live.

In addition, Len will also be visiting Lee Elementary School and performing a few songs on Friday night of The Big Muddy Folk Festival, then he'll be teaching all day Saturday at the St. Louis Tionol.

Concert and Céilí Dance April 11
With guests Máirtín de Cógáin and Jimmy Crowley, two generations from Cork!

Welcome back to Máirtín -- singer for The Fuchsia Band-- who gave a wonderful concert at The Chez last year, and has performed at Paddy Malone's a couple times since then.  Singer Jimmy Crowley, a Cork institutution, joins him on this tour.

We'll have a one-hour concert of Irish songs from this pair of terrific singers, then we'll clear the floor and set up for dancing.

Máirtín will teach and call the dances,  Jimmy and local musicians will play music. Everyone is invited to dance!

No experience and no partner needed.   Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to wear for dancing so we don't damage the great wood floor.

All ages are welcome. When we say "no experience necessary" we really mean it. Come on out!
