Irish music at Art in the Park this weekend
It should be a great art-full and musical weekend at Stephens Lake Park!
Saturday, 11 am on the Youth Roots stage Tim Langen and the "junior jammers" play traditional music (Irish and other folk styles)
Saturday, 3 - 5 pm on the main stage
The Kelihans Kansas City Irish Rock and Roll
Songs of family and friends, old times and legend. Pub rock with punk energy and working class harmonies. Birthed from the midtown of Kansas City behind years of weekly duty at happy hour. Given to sometimes raucous, sometimes beautiful, deliveries of original tunes and heartfelt traditionals offered to honor a heritage that inspires us.

Summer Arts Program!!
It's almost here! June 12 - August 8
In its eighth year, our summer arts program has really blossomed. We have a great roster of classes this summer, including one for non-musicians-non-dancers called Regional Styles in Irish Music. Besides classes, though, this program has become a truly authentic cultural exchange that enriches our community. Besides teaching classes this summer, our guest artist-in-residence, Conor Caldwell, will be playing music around mid-Missouri and immersing himself in Missouri fiddle style, old-time and bluegrass music.
Conor's debut in Columbia:
THursday, June 12:
- 8:45 am radio interview on KFRU 1400AM with David Lile
- 6 -7 p.m. Twilight Festival in front of Bluestem Missouri Crafts on Ninth St.
Friday June 13
Join us to welcome our artist-in-residence, Conor Caldwell, for the summer!
7 pm - Irish ceili dance and social evening at First Christian Church, 101 N Tenth St (corner of Tenth and Walnut, park behind building and enter through back door). Conor, Tim and friends will play music; Christine Harker will be calling the dances.
FREE and open to everyone! (no door fee this month!) All ages welcome. Feel free to bring goodies to share.
FUN CLASSES! You can still register!
If you've been thinking about it, pondering, planning... now is the time!
TO REGISTER: send e-mail to Kate Akers kakers@moceltic.org or call 442-2048. Please include your phone number in the e-mail in case we need to contact you on short-notice.

Two descriptions that are particularly important:
The House Dance Tradition of Co. Donegal No partner required, min. 8 participants. Teens through seniors are welcome! Classes will be in two parts, a small section taken up with contextual information and DVD viewing, and most of the class then dedicated to learning these social dances from the northwest of Ireland. One new one will be added each week until the class has almost a full repertoire. Dances (mainly two-hand dances) will include: Shoe the Donkey, Barndance, Highland, Waltz, Marine, Mazurka, 'Damsha Mór ' (Big Dance). Irish social dancing is aerobic, fun exercise; footwork is low to the ground, low-impact. (This is NOT Riverdance stuff!)
Irish tunes with emphasis on playing for dance Melody and backup instruments are welcome. Targeted for players of Irish music or other styles, with a goal of learning a set of tunes to play for Irish folk dancing (ceili and set). Class will be divided into two parts, a small portion taken up with contextual information, DVD viewing, CD listening and discussion of dance-related issues such as tune selection for dances, style, rhythm and speed, communicating with the caller. Most of the class is then dedicated to learning tunes chosen with social dancing in mind. Participants should be intermediate level musicians, but it's not necessary to have a background in Irish traditional music.
Rental instruments: we have 2 fiddles, 3 accordions and 4 bodhrans available for class participants to rent.
Lessons: Conor is available for individual lessons on fiddle, mandolin, banjo and whistle. Brian is available for lessons on concertina, accordion, singing and sean nos dance. He will usually be here for Wed. evenings only, but may occasionally stay through Thursday to give lessons.

Album release concert: A Tribute to Bob Dyer
Local folk music hero Bob Dyer will be remembered and honored through a tribute album, Saturday, June 7 in Boonville.
A gaggle of friends and colleagues of the late Bob Dyer will gather for an album release concert for "The Wandering Fool: Songs by Bob Dyer Sung in Tribute by his Friends" on Saturday, June 7, at 7 p.m., at Thespian Hall in Dyer's hometown of Boonville. The well-known songwriter, poet and historian passed away in April 2007, and longtime cohorts Cathy Barton and Dave Para spent the better part of the past year producing the 78-minute CD featuring 19 cuts by local musicians and friends of Dyer's. The concert will feature as many artists on the album as possible plus some additional guests.
Barton and Para produced the album for Dyer's Big Canoe Records label with financial support by the Turner Hall River Rats for the Arts, of which Bob was a member. To purchase the album, visit: http://www.bigcanoerecords.com |
