Patrick Street concert, Nov 2
7:30 p.m.
"The Legends of Irish Music" come to Jeff City
This isn't their first trip to Mid-Missouri, but
it's the first time they've all arrived together!
In 2002 we had Sligo fiddler Kevin Burke
here for a solo performance in which the sound
system was overthrown by popular demand (a mob of
insistant fiddlers demanding their acoustic rights).
(Kevin's recent CD release with Cal Scott,
"Across the Black River" is currently under
consideration in three categories (including
Best Traditional World Music Album)in the first
round ballot of Grammy
nominations. In 2002 Kevin was awarded a
National Heritage Fellowship by the
National Endowment for the Arts, the highest
award in the US for folk artists. His album
"Sweeney's Dream" is in the Smithsonian Folkways
catalog.)
Andy Irvine graced us with songs on
March 19, 2003, but not too many had an ear for
music that night, as it was also the day the US
invaded Iraq. He started his set with "When the Boys
are on Parade," setting the tone for the evening:
Some will wonder
what's to fear and say there is no danger here
But there has never been a year when Soldiers
haven't been at war
And the eternal executions and the bloody
revolutions
And the ultimate solutions too have all been seen
before.
And you may well
prefer abstention but I feel compelled to mention
You'd do well to pay attention when the Boys are on
Parade.
(Andy has twice been inducted to the
Fiddler's Green Hall of Fame for his
contributions as a solo artist and his early work
with the band Sweeney's Men.)
And in April 2004 Ged Foley and
John Carty rattled the walls
of the packed-to-the-gills Chez Coffeehouse with
their terrific tunes and songs.
If you saw any one of those shows in Columbia, you
know you are in for a treat Friday night! You'll see
no dancers dipped in glitter; this is a feast for
the ears from master musicians of the highest
caliber.
They will perform at Richardson Auditorium
in Jefferson City on Friday, Nov 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Presented by Lincoln University Share in the Arts.
Ticket information:
www.shareinthearts.org
Tickets are available in advance and at the door.

CMCAA will host a ceili dance
immediately following the concert, on stage in
Richardson Aud. Refreshments will be provided.

Dec 1: Keenan and O'Brien concert
Next CMCAA concert in Columbia
Paddy Keenan, renowned Uilleann
piper, whistle and flute player, was a bandmate in
The Bothy Band of Patrick Street's Kevin Burke.
Paddy is a third generation piper and comes from a
family of Travellers, a sub-culture in Ireland who
are soaked with music and folklore.
Performing with him will be Patsy O'Brien,
singer/songwriter and guitarist whose jazzy flare
brings a freshness to old favorites. His jazz
version of Star of the County Down, with Paddy on
low whistle, is fantastic.
(And I am not one to wantonly laud jazz
infiltrations of traditional music, I assure you!!)
Event Info
Saturday, Dec. 1, 7:00 p.m.
Unity Center of Columbia
1600 W. Broadway
$12 / $10 for CMCAA members / $8 students & seniors

Halloween.... Did you know it's Celtic?
Yes, really!
From Wikipedia:
Halloween originated from the Pagan festival Samhain,
celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great
Britain.
Samhain (pronounced / s aun / [sow-an] from
the Old Irish samain) is the word for
November in the Gaelic languages. The Scottish
Gaelic spelling is Samhainn or Samhuinn
(for the feast), or an t-Samhain (for the
month). The Festival of Samhain is a celebration of
the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and
is generally regarded as 'The Celtic New Year'.
The same word was used for a month in the ancient
Celtic calendar, in particular the first three
nights of this month, with the festival marking the
end of the summer season and the end of the harvest.
A modernized version of this festival continues
today in some of the traditions of the Catholic All
Souls' Day, the secular Halloween, and in folk
practices of Samhain itself in the Celtic Nations
and the Irish and Scottish diasporas. It is also
observed by various types of Neopagans
