Rowan is a Celtic and World Music trio based in Lawrence, KS that has
been performing in the Midwest for 10 years. Their music is an eclectic blend of
styles from the Celtic countries as well as other European folk styles. It
transcends genres as the listener is taken on a journey through not only a
topography of cultural expressions but on a spiritual journey through time as
well.
From a 17th century English Faire to an 18th century Jacobite uprising to the
American Civil War to 20th century Belfast, their music evokes what human beings
share down through the ages and across borders.
Doug Harvey: cittern, guitar, whistle and vocals
Marianne Payette Carter: fiddle, bodhran, guitar, vocals
Lance Zed: fiddle, concertina, vocals
“A potent mixture of expertise gleaned from traditional Irish and Scottish
roots and personalised reflections and circumstances . . . Rowan’s collective
gift is to stamp their own personalities on traditional music emerging with a
tight powerful group sound. A class U.S. Celtic act with a solid grasp of
traditional dynamics.”
John O’Regan, Folkroots magazine

Summer Arts Program Announcement
Yep, it's that time of year again! Seventh year is good luck!
Once again we will be offering a series of summer music classes in June and
July.
WHEN:
6-week session
beginning June 11 and ending July 28.
There will be no classes during the week of July 4.
Our guest artist-in-residence this year will be singer, musician and Irish
studies scholar Brian Hart.
Read Brian's bio.
Brian has been a regular visitor and performer in Columbia over the past
five years, so we are delighted to have him come for an extended stay to
share his talents.
To take full advantage of Brian's expertise as singer and linguist, I'm proposing that the traditional singing and Irish language classes be "intensive" classes which will meet twice per week. I am interested in hearing from people who might be interested in taking either of these two courses and and parents of kids who might like to take the junior classes. Please note that kids are also welcome to take the evening classes.
Here is the tentative schedule so far:
Monday and Wednesday evenings: (these are both "intensive" classes - 2x per week)
fee: $90 each or $165 to take both of these classes.
Irish traditional singing -- 5:30 - 6:45 pm
Irish language -- 7 to 8:15 pmTuesday evenings, fee $50 each

As soon as I have the locations confirmed I will post detailed descriptions and registration information on the web site.
I'm also working on possibly offering beginning and improvers' fiddle
classes and a tunes by ear class (evening). Things are not quite
firmed up yet, but I wanted to get the schedule out to folks who are starting to
plan their summers.
Please check the web site over the next week for updates and more details!

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with craft projects and coordination for the kids classes -- we need two adult volunteers for the Tuesday classes and one for Thursday.
Help! We need a treasurer!
For the past 6 years, Terry Phillips, has served as treasurer for CMCAA, helping us establish our nonprofit status and making sure all the i's were dotted and t's crossed as our organization has grown. She would now like to step down, but first we need someone new to step up and offer their time and talents to help.
Do you have a bit of experience as an organizational treasurer or accountant? It requires only a few hours a month, but it's enormously important to keeping this organization afloat. Terry will train the next treasurer to use QuickBooks and pass along all our records.
Thanks for giving it your consideration. If you would like to know more, please contact me: kakers@moceltic.org or 442-2048

The Young Irish Musicians Weekend,
June 22-24, 2007
(This looks like it will be GREAT FUN!)
The Center for Irish Music ( www.centerforirishmusic.org ) has an exciting event coming up in June: The Young Irish Musicians Weekend, June 22-24, 2007 in St. Paul, MN.
The focus is instrument workshops / lessons with master artists for students under the age of 21. The intermediate level is great for students who already know how to play an instrument (2 or 3+ years), but perhaps have not yet tried much Irish music. More advanced classes are available for those who already play Irish music. We will have a beginner level class available for people who've been at their instrument for only one or two years and would like to try out some Irish music.
Aside from those workshops, we are also offering a lot of programming for students' parents and the general public including 6 different classes, concerts, sessions, a ceili and much more. (I've started calling it a crash course in Irish culture as we have a literature overview class, a history overview, a language class, a ceili dance class, a tin whistle class and a "traveling to Ireland as a family" info seminar) There is a ceili on Friday, June 22, a concert on Saturday, June 23 and culminates in a master-student recital on Sunday, June 24. Most events are happening at McNally-Smith College and the St. Paul Conservatory of Music - in downtown St Paul.
We're bringing in James Kelly, Fintan Vallely and Tommy Martin to join our local super stars Paddy O'Brien and Daithi Sproule for a unique, family-friendly, non-competitive event. Many members of the local Irish music community are involved in the weekend as well. Lots of info is available on our website at www.centerforirishmusic.org
For students under 21, we have an early registration deadline of April 1 for the rate of $185 for the weekend - after which the cost increases. (Student registration includes: workshops with master artists on Saturday and Sunday, Ceili on Friday, Concert on Saturday, Recital on Sunday, Friday night pizza party, morning and afternoon snacks on Saturday and Sunday.) People can register until we are full, but the sooner the better. And they get a discount if they register before April 1. The public programming has no registration limit at this time (and no discount - it's only $25 a class) but we are only able to accommodate up to 100 young students this first year.
Local and regional calendar:

Don't forget -- St. Louis Tionol is coming up
April 20-22. www.tionol.org
These classes with master musicians are WELL worth the 2 hour drive!
