About Connie Dover
Connie
Dover is an accomplished singer of the traditional music of Great Britain
and Ireland. Her soaring, crystal clear voice and inspired arrangements
display a depth and breadth of range that have earned her a rightful place
among the world's finest Celtic singers.Connie began her Celtic music career as a lead singer for the Kansas City-based Irish band, Scartaglen. Currently performing in a duo with former Scartaglen member Roger Landes, she has toured extensively throughout the USA and Canada, appearing on radio, television, in concert and at nearly every major folk festival in North America.
Glen Road - Mike Dugger, Turlach Boylan and Mason Brown
Imagine yourself in Ireland at the end of the day. The weather is rough and everyone is inside in the kitchen while rain beats on the windows. The fire gets stoked with peat, the kettle boils and mugs of hot sweet tea are passed around. Someone takes a fiddle off the wall and launches a reel, joined soon by flute and guitar. The floor is cleared for a setdance. Sparks fly from the flagstones, songs are sung, joke and stow drill through the air and you are lost in the moment. Welcome to Glen Road in concert; bring your dancing shoes.
Turlach Boylan, flute player extraordinaire, is from County Derry, Ireland. He now lives in Houston. He is widely recognized for a highly praised debut solo CD entitled, “The Tidy Cottage.” Boylan was a finalist in the 2000 Crossroads Magazine music awards. In addition to flute, he also plays tenor banjo, tin whistle and penny whistle. Mike Dugger began his music career as a guitarist with the acclaimed Celtic band Scartaglen and quickly graduated to playing tenor banjo and fiddle. He is a gifted tenor with a strong voice and is a noted composer and songwriter.

St.
Patrick's Day Events on Saturday March 17
The book we will be reading for March is Last Night’s Fun: A Book about Traditional Irish Music by Ciaran Carson.
ISBN: 0865475318
ISBN-13: 9780865475311
Format: Paperback, 208pp
Publisher: North Point Press
A summary follows.
From the Publisher
Ciaran Carson's Last Night's Fun is a sparkling celebration of Irish
music and life that is itself a literary performance of the highest order.
Each chapter takes the title of a traditional tune, and as in a session
played by brilliant improvising musicians, each tune leads into another,
melodies and variations weaving in and out in a haze of talk and memory.
Carson's inspired jumble of recording history, poetry, tall tales, and
polemic captures the sound and vigor of a ruthlessly unsentimental music. A
leading Irish poet who is also an accomplished flute player, he tells of his
Belfast childhood, of learning to play music, of his travels in Ireland and
America, of poteen, pub life, and the special pleasure taken in a well-made
Fry "the morning after the night before." Loosely interpreted standards, as
Carson points out, achieve a special kind of profundity and resonance - a
tune can never be played the same way twice - so this is also a book about
the poignancy of lost airs, about music as "a way of renegotiating lost
time" and recognizing mortality.
We will be meeting to discuss the book on Monday, March 26 at 6 pm at the Cherry Street Artisan.
