Sunday
September 2 -- Different Drums of Ireland
7 p.m. at Unity Center of Columbia
1600 W. Broadway, Columbia MO 65203
$10 adults, $6 students/seniors, free for kids 12 & under
The bodhran is a frame drum used in Irish traditional music; in the North
of Ireland it is a symbol of Irish traditional music and thus the cultural
identity of Catholic Ireland. The Lambeg drum is a large bass drum that is
carried in parades by the Orange Lodge and is an integral part of the
identity of Northern Protestants. In 1992, Roy Arbuckle and Stephen Matier
brought these drums together in a cross-cultural community relations
project. Different Drums of Ireland started as an experiment in peace that
brought the messages of coexistence, tolerance and "marching to the beat of
ones own drum" to schools and community centers across Northern Ireland.
15 years later, the drum ensemble includes an Uilleann piper, guitarist and
a myriad of percussion instruments. They play at festivals around the globe
and are often featured guests at conflict resolution conferences.
I could ramble on about this unique band, but better that you watch this
video clip of the band talking about their ethos and vision:

Tuesday
Oct 2 -- Beppe Gambetta
Beppe Gambetta is acknowledged as Europe's premier guitar stylist. He is a gifted acoustic guitarist and vocalist. His distinctive sound is a multi-cultural tapestry of traditional, original and classical music tunes and songs. Beppe's compositions and arrangements reflect a colorful mosaic of musical influences...from his native Genova, Italy to American flatpicking; Celtic, central European, and Mediterranean dance tunes; classical fingerstyle; and more. Beppe's charm, engaging personality, and remarkable versatility on acoustic guitar captivate audiences without exception.
"Few players on the planet could so successfully fuse an unwavering
allegiance to tradition with impatient, wide-eyed vision, tongue-in-cheek
humor with solemn devotion, and folksy song styles with progressive
improvisation, as Gambetta has done on Slade Stomp."
-John D'Agostino, Taylor Guitars

Sponsorship Opportunities
As you see above, we have a very ambitious concert series lined up for the next 8 months. For the past 6 years, CMCAA has been totally supported by membership dues, member donations, ticket sales, class fees, and two "small projects grants" from the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs. We've done great things on our own, but now we would like to invite local businesses and individuals to help us take this grass-roots community arts organization a step further.
If you are interested in being a sponsor or know of a business who might like to be a sponsor, please talk to us.
We have a sponsorship packet in the final stages of editing, which will be posted on the Web site within the next few days.

By the way, have you perused the amazing wealth of Irish music and dance videos on www.Youtube.com? There is some great old stuff out there. For example, search for "Tommy Makem" or "Bothy Band" or Planxty or "sean nos" or "the corries" or "tannahill weavers" or "bruce molsky" or "leela and ellie grace" or your favorite band/artist and you'll find some really wonderful stuff.
