No Ceili this Friday -- go to the Tionol if you can!
We've decided to cancel the ceili this Friday because there is a big ceili in St. Louis Friday night at The Taproom as part of the St. Louis Tionol and Mississippi River Celtic Festival. (see www.tionol.org ) Many Columbia folks are going over to St. Louis for the ceili and other parts of the event this weekend. Our monthly ceilis will resume on May 13.
Christine Harker will be teaching and calling the dances at the .St. Louis ceili and she will also be teaching a set dance workshop on Saturday.
The centerpiece of the Tionol is 6 hours of music, song and dance workshops on Saturday, given by master musicians, some coming from Ireland just for this event. Every year the lineup of musicians for this event gets more and more impressive -- this year is no exception. The classrooms of Nerinx Hall will be filled with a who's-who selection of traditional music greats. These teachers will all be performers as well at the evening concert at the Sheldon Concert Hall, an exceptional venue for hearing acoustic music. Tickets for just the concert are $20 in advance/ $24 at the door (if there are any left).

At the age of just 23, Welsh-born Catrin Finch is already considered one of the finest classical harpists in the world. She also holds the Royal Appointment as Harpist to HRH the Prince of Wales, an honor that was last granted in 1871 and revived when Prince Charles heard her play at his 50th Birthday celebration. Catrin?s repertoire includes new, original pieces by artists such as Pat Metheny and Dave Grusin, as well as imaginative interpretations of popular and Welsh folk classics. Setting the traditional gilded harp aside for a sleek modern version, Catrin works hard to incorporate a modern sound and feel to the oldest instrument in the world.
