About the show:
Two days before The Bard's 245th birthday, he'll be appearing on stage in amazingly good form!

Scottish Actor Christopher Tait will portray Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, complete with 18th c. costume and authentic dialect. His performance will be a first person narrative account of Burns' life, and dramatic readings of his work.

Performing with Chris will be Alex and Carrie Sutherland and friends, Scottish musicians residing in St. Louis, who perform Scottish traditional songs, including many of those penned by and collected by Robert Burns.

Robert Burns (1759-1796) is commemorated around the time of his birthday every year (January 25) by Scots worldwide. The traditional means is with a "Burns Supper" which has a particular itinerary and menu, including Haggis, an infamous traditional Scottish dish.

While not a dinner, We're very excited about this concert as a way to celebrate Scotland's national poet and learn more about his life and work. It promises to be a whole lot of fun and even fairly educational!

Christopher is doing a "tour of Missouri" which includes several Burns Dinners, so if you are interested in attending one, I'll list the ones I know of on the calendar.

**** Class location change *****

Step dancing and Irish music for Kids ages 5 - 12

LOCATION: Unity Center of Columbia, 1600 W Broadway

Colleen Deisner will be teaching step dancing. Colleen, now an MU student, has studied with the Mary Clarkson Dance School in St. Louis since childhood. Students of the Clarkson school performed with The Chieftains last Saturday in Jesse Hall. We're very glad that Colleen wants to teach dance here in Columbia while she's going to MU!
Deirdre Harnedy will be teaching the Irish music portion.

Set Dancing for Teens and Adults
Thursday evenings, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., 4 weeks for $25 or 2 people for $40
In this class you will be learning some of the more complex dances that we'll be doing at our monthly ceilis. By teaching these dances to a small group in a class situation, we hope to increase the number and variety of different dances we can incorporate at the ceilis, because having a few people who know the dances already to help those who don't makes it much easier to teach them, and way more fun for all.
If you've been enjoying our monthly ceilis, please consider taking this class.
Christine Harker will be coming down from Kirksville to teach each week. She's just back from learning a bunch of new dances at an intensive dance event in Ireland!

In America is directed by Jim Sheridan, who also directed BLOODY SUNDAY, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, and MY LEFT FOOT. In this film he turns his attention to a young Irish family who settles in NYC in the 1980s. The screenplay, written by Sheridan and his two daughters, is based on his own family's experience.

Green Linnet Liquidates Inventory at $4 per CD
Get em while you can!

Green Linnet, the biggest publisher of Celtic music artists, based in Danbury CT, is having a huge clearance sale on many of their older catalog titles. They are clearing the shelves for $4 per CD plus shipping, with no limit on the number you can buy. Brows the sale titles at their web site: www.greenlinnet.com

Editorial note:
Green Linnet has been the subject of much controversy for several years, accused by many of their artists of not paying royalties for years at a time. They are currently embroiled in a lawsuit put forth by Mick Maloney, Liz Carroll, Joanie Madden and others.

While I would normally not advocate a Green Linnet web site sale wherein they are selling off their stock cheaper than the artists themselves can buy them to sell at concerts, in this case they are older titles and this may be the last call for these titles. In the fallout of the law suit, it appears likely that Green Linnet will be sold in the coming months and if that happens, older titles are likely to be retired and not reprinted.

Some of the titles I highly recommend on the sale list:
#3123 Bain, Aly and Phil Cunningham, The Ruby
#3117 Capercaillie, To The Moon
#3111 The Bothy Band, Live In Concert
#3045 The House Band, Word Of Mouth
#1136 Carthy, Martin, The Collection
#1126 Déanta, Déanta
#3009 Burke, Kevin, If The Cap Fits
#3065 Daly, Jackie, Music from Sliabh Luachra
#3005 The Bothy Band, Old Hag You Have Killed Me
#3062 Gaughan, Dick, Handful Of Earth
#1053 Moloney, Mick, UnCommon Bonds
#3052 Carthy, Martin & Dave Swarbrick, Life And Limb
#3051 Gavin, Frankie, Frankie Goes To Town
#3013 The Bothy Band, Out Of The Wind Into The Sun
#1070 Silly Wizard, A Glint of Silver

2004 St. Louis Tionol artist roster announced

www.tionol.org

The St. Louis Tionol will be held April 2 - 4 and will include a ceili on Friday night, called by Christine Harker of Kirksville, classes with world-renowned artists all day Saturday, a concert featuring all the guest artists Saturday night and jam sessions on Sunday.

The web site has just been updated with the list of artists in attendance this year, and the surprise highlight are the names Tommy Peoples (fiddle) and John Carty (fiddle and banjo).

John was recently named Traditional Musician of the Year for 2003 by TG4, Ireland's Irish-language television channel, and Irish super-group Patrick Street have just announced they are adding John Carty to their lineup. The group already includes Andy Irvine, Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly and Ged Foley.
