Musicky things tonight!
Our monthly open jam session for players of all ability levels is tonight at The Chez coffeehouse, 100 Hitt St. beginning about 7:30 p.m. Come to play, dance or just listen. Beverages provided, bring a treat to share if it's convenient.
Later tonight, Helen Gubbins (accordion and whistle), Una ni Fhlannag?n (harp, whistle) and guest Brian Miller (guitar, flute) will play Irish music from 10 pm to midnight at The Music Cafe on 9th Street.
This will be Helen's last performance in Columbia. She leaves tomorrow to go up to teach and perform at the Minnesota Celtic Festival, then on to teach at the Milwaukee Irish Fest summer school before returning to Ireland to continue her studies. Many thanks to Helen for the talents she's shared with us over the last year!
KOPN presents Maura O'Connell at Mojo's Saturday, August 7, 8:00
p.m., $10
mauraoconnell.com
This will be an excellent concert with one of the shining stars of both Irish and American music.
Maura started her recording career as lead vocalist with the celebrated traditional Celtic group DeDanaan in 1981. Her style and repertoire has evolved to be far-ranging and richly diverse, but on all of her 10 solo CDs you can find a bit of home -- Irish songs, style and references come through.
Regardless of the genre, she finds the heart of a song and pulls the listener along on a journey with her amazingly flexible and expressive voice.
Harp Concert with Una ni Fhlannagain and guests
Sunday, August 15, 7 p.m. at Unity Center of Columbia, 1600 W. Broadway
admission $10 adults, $2 kids 14 & under
This event is a CMCAA fundraiser to support our summer arts program, concerts and purchase of student instruments.
Una ni Fhlannagain, from Galway, Ireland, has been in Columbia all summer teaching harp, whistle, fiddle, Irish language, dancing and sean nos singing. It's been a very busy summer of classes, but not too many performances. We thought we'd give everyone a chance to really hear her play before she leaves us. Una will be studying at Wesleyan University in Connecticut for the fall semester.
Ceili Friday, August 13
