2004 Summer Arts Program

Artists-in-Residence

Úna ni Fhlannagáin will be here from June 4 - August 20
Coming from Co. Galway, Ireland, Úna ni Fhlannagáin is an accomplished young Irish harpist and experienced Irish traditional musician. Currently studying music at University College Cork, her style is rooted in diverse musical influences such as the dance music tradition of East Clare, the sean-nós singing style of Connemara, and the music of the ancient harpers. A Galway and Connacht champion, she’s in demand as a performer at high-profile events and has played for such notable dignitaries as the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, the Jamaican Prime Minister, and internationally-renowned artists Pauline Bewick and John Behan. A fluent Irish speaker, singer, and multi-instrumentalist (harp, tin whistle and fiddle), she’ll be teaching here in Columbia for the summer before going to Wesleyan University, Connecticut, on a prestigious exchange program to study experimental composition and jazz.

Deirdre Harnedy will be here until June 25
Helen Gubbins will be here until May 4.

Irish Arts Camp, June 14 - 18 for kids aged 5 - 18
Full day program, Monday through Friday, $225
Half day option is $150.

The detailed descriptions of topics being offered this summer are online, along with an online registration form and a printable brochure.

Step dancing classes will occur in the mornings, taught by Ellie Grace. Kids need to bring a sack lunch; everything else is provided, including healthy snacks. Special shoes are not required for dance classes.

Weekly Classes

Weekly classes for adults and kids in fiddle, whistle, harp and Irish language with Una ni Fhlannagáin and Deirdre Harnedy begin June 6, 7 & 8 (sunday, Monday & Tuesday) and will continue for 10 weeks. (excluding July 5 & 6)
Exact class schedules will appear on the web site shortly.

In addition to weekly classes, we would like to offer an intense Irish language class that will meet twice or three times per week. If you are interested in taking this to progress rapidly with Irish language, learning conversational Irish from a native speaker, please reply to this note and let me know.

HARP Classes
If you are interested in learning to play the Irish harp from Una while she is here, please contact me right away. I need to know if you HAVE a harp or NEED a harp. We are investigating options for renting or purchasing several harps if there are students who are seriously interested and will commit to classes for the summer.

Sponsorships
We are seeking individuals and organizations to be sponsors for our 2004 Summer Arts Program. Bringing musicians from Ireland to teach and perform in our community for the summer is an expensive undertaking as work visa and travel costs have increased substantially this year. CMCAA has consistently tried to make our classes, concerts and other events accessible to everyone and keep fees low, as well as provide instruments for beginning students, but sustaining these programs requires support from our community. We're very proud of our summer arts program and the authentic learning opportunities it offers as well as adding to the cultural diversity of central Missouri. If you or your organization/business would consider being a sponsor with a tax-deductible donation of $50, $100, $500 or $1000, or sponsoring a specific event or purchase of an instrument, please contact Kate Akers, CMCAA board president, 573--442-2048 kakers@chivalry.com
