Here's the whole archive.Tunes By Ear, an informal drop-in class/session is happening every Tuesday evening from 8:30 - 10:00 p.m. for traditional musicians of all levels. Deirdre Harnedy, our artist-in-residence teaches several new tunes and you can come with tunes that you want help polishing up, or whatever. Stay for dessert. $5 suggested donation. Kate and Jeff Akers' house, 1411 Anthony St., Columbia. phone: 442-2048CMCAA hosts Céliís on Friday Nov 14 and Friday Dec 12
Two Céilís, or Irish music and dance evenings, are on for the second Fridays of November and December. Local and guest musicians will play music for céilí (kay'-lee) and set dancing. Come to dance, or just to listen, watch and hang out.
Time: 7:30 - 10 pm
7:00 pm - instruction for beginners on basic footwork and moves. (come to the dance early if you've never done this before)
Location: First Christian Church fellowship hall, corner of Walnut and Tenth Streets, Columbia
Admission is $5 for adults, kids are freeThe first half of the evening will be céilí dances, which are most similar in structure to American contra or line dances. After the break will be set dancing, which is the somewhat more complex type of dance with sets of four couples. (Similar in structure to American square dances.)
We'd like to make this an ongoing monthly event if the first two are successful. All dances will be taught and called. Don't know much about Irish social dancing? We have classes every Thursday evening that you can join, and we've linked to a few web resources about ceili and set dancing on our web site: www.moceltic.org/dance.html
Here is an informal analysis of Irish Set dancing vs. Contra and square dancing. http://www.nmc.edu/~hmorgenstein/Essays/Irish.html
As you read this, keep in mind that in IRELAND, the set dance moves are not called out at céilís -- people "just know" how they go because there are a limited number of dances and folks learn the sequence of moves after dancing them for years. But we intend to call (yell out the moves for) all the dances at our céilís in Columbia.-------------------------------------------------------------------

Fall music, dance and language classes are underway
Due to visa processing delays, Helen Gubbins has not been able to return to Columbia yet to teach classes, so we have had to reorganize/reschedule many of our fall classes. The schedule is as follows:
Monday evenings: 6 - 7 pm Fiddle 1 class (beginner)
7 - 8 pm Fiddle 3 class (intermediate)
8 - 9 pm Whistle 2 class (adv. beginner)
Tuesday evenings: 5:30 - 6:30 beginning Irish language
6:30 - 7:30 pm Whistle 1 class (beginning)
7:30 - 8:30 pm whistle 3 class (intermediate)
8:30 - 10pm Learn Tunes By Ear drop-in session
(bring a recorder, come once or come every week. $5 suggested donation. )
Thursday evenings: 6:30 - 8 pm Set dancingEnrollment has been low for these classes. We were unsure everything would work out, so publicity for the classes was minimal. You can still join any of these classes, though; we'll get you caught up if necessary!

Accordions & fiddles need players!
CMCAA currently has 3 button accordions, 1 piano accordion and 2 fiddles that are looking for beginning players.
If you are interested in learning one of these instruments, we'd like to help. There is a small (very reasonable) rental fee for instruments and we ask you to commit to taking a class or lessons on the instrument.---------------------------------------------------------------------
Music Sales is a publishing and distribution company that carries LOTS of books and other instructional media for traditional music. CMCAA can order wholesale from them and since we are a non-profit, do not have to pay or collect sales tax. Hey - it's a fund raiser and you get great music books!
We will be placing an order for products from the Music Sales catalog on Friday, October 24. Anyone who would like to order any music or song books, CDs or videos from Music Sales can send me their order by noon on Friday (Oct 24). Pay just the list price, no shipping and no sales tax. If your order totals at least $50, take a 20% discount.
The only catch is that I need your payment WITH your order. You can give me a check (to CMCAA), or pay online through PayPal (moceltic@chivalry.com).
The Music Sales catalog is online and searchable here:
