Here's the whole archive.House Concert! Thursday, Sept 25, 800 p.m.
Kate and Jeff Akers' house, 1411 Anthony St.
Reservations required, seating limited to 35.. 442-2048 or kakers@chivalry.com
$12 suggested donation at the door. What luck! Button accordionist extraordinaire, Johnny B. Connolly, is on tour this month with guitarist and singer/songwriter Casey Neill. The two of them happen to be on their way from Colorado to Ohio this week and contacted me to see if they could stop over in Columbia. It's short notice, but I'm having a house concert for them this Thursday at 800 p.m. (After Twighlight Festival)
Originally from Dublin and now residing in Portland, OR, Johnny B Connolly is one of the "young guns" of traditional Irish music. A consummate button accordionist, Johnny plays with grace, maturity and a sure knowledge of the tradition. His lyrical, flowing style echoes strongly of his mentor, Kevin Burke's graceful fiddling.
Inspired by both Irish and American musical traditions, Casey Neill has three albums to his credit and has shared stages with acts as diverse as trad band Dervish, punk luminary Jello Biafra, and songwriter Sarah McLachlan. His backing guitar work on the instrumental sets of tunes travels from subtle and quiet to punchy and thunderous.
In the world of Celtic music Casey is known as a great backup player who's toured a lot with fiddler Martin Hayes. In the realm of contemporary folk, and especially environmental activism, Casey is known as a compelling singer/songwriter who speaks to the heart through his music.
Casey's own band, The Casey Neill Trio, performs original songs, fiery medleys of reels and jigs, haunting harmony singing, and hints of bluegrass and old-timey Americana. Balladry, with its "sweet beautiful sadness" (Cake Magazine, awarding "Top Honors" to Neill), is definitely one of his strengths.

Here's an interview with Casey Neill
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Amphitheatre/8718/Issue4/4a.htmlLast September, Johnny was here with Aiden Brennan and performed in Columbia with Leela and Ellie Grace. In June 2002, Johnny and Aiden performed at Mojo's in Columbia. We received a lot of really positive feedback from both shows, so we're very pleased to welcome Johnny back to Columbia, and get to know Casey Neill!
Please note Since this is a house concert, seating is limited, so we'd really appreciate if it you could make a reservation. Just phone us or send an e-mail. 442-2048 or kakers@chivalry.com Children are welcome if they are good listeners. You're invited to bring a dessert or snack item to share (only if it's convenient!); drinks will be provided.
Never been to a house concert? Sounds a bit weird?
It's a time-honored practice of having a concert in a small, comfortable setting (usually someone's home) with no amplification. Just the musicians and you. It's a social evening of music, good company and usually dessert. All the money that goes into the hat, goes to the musician. The hosts provide the venue and the chairs, the guests provide a warm atmosphere and the musicians do the rest.
