Summer Arts Program with Irish artists-in-residence
Once again we're bringing Irish musicians to teach music and perform in Columbia for the summer. This year we will host two students from University College Cork, Helen Gubbins and Dierdre Harnedy. Helen plays the button accordion and Dierdre plays flute, whistle and fiddle.
They will be teaching evening classes throughout July and August. These include beginning and intermediate flute/whistle, and playing music by ear, which will focus on techniques for strengthening your musical ear, especially for people who learned to play by reading sheet music. This will use Irish tunes as examples, but will be beneficial to musicians in any genre.
In addition, they will coordinate events during Irish Arts Week, July 14-18.
Irish Arts Day Camp for kids 6 - 13
9 am - noon Monday through Friday July 14-18.
Topics offered during this week include, Irish step dancing (taught by Ellie Grace), Irish music, Tin Whistle, Irish language, instrument sampler, and "All About Ireland."
Irish Arts Workshops for Teens
1 - 430 pm Monday through Friday July 14-18
Topics include Irish dancing step dancing and Irish Social Dancing (set and ceilidh), Irish music jam session, folk instrument test drive, legendary Ancient Ireland, Irish song tradition, and Irish language.
Weekly Classes
In addition to the flurry of activities during our Irish Arts Week, we'll offer weekly classes throughout July and August. Helen and Dierdre will teach several classes and lead a jam session for folks who want to learn some new tunes and hone their skills in fun, informal setting. Christine Harker will continue to teach Irish Set and Ceilidh Dancing.
Are there any other classes you'd like to see? We can still add a class or two! Let me know!

CMCAA gets the nonprofit stamp of approval!!
Well, it's official -- CMCAA is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are an affiliate member of the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance (Folk Alliance), a wonderful, amazing organization that fosters and works for the interests of folk music, musicians and audiences across the country. If you would like to know more about Folk Alliance, see www.folk.org
Now that we are a 501(c)3, any cash or in-kind donations made to the organization are tax deductible. Additionally, we are now eligible to apply for grants to help with our programs, and will soon be exempt from sales tax.
We have formed a board of directors and adopted by-laws for the organization. The bylaws will soon be posted on the web site. The Board of Directors is composed of the following folks -- all of whom have been active and supportive of CMCAA through the first two years. (Two years! can you believe it??)
Kate Akers, Terry Phillips, Vickie Rightmyre, Christine Harker, Carol Goodnick and Rebecca Logan

Celtic Connections cancelled
KBIA (91.3 FM) stopped carrying Bryan Kelso Crow's great radio show Celtic Connections earlier this month. It was in the 7-8 pm Saturday spot. They are now carrying a show in that spot called Your Folk Connection. It's great that KBIA is offering more folk music, but Bryan's show is definitely a loss, especially so since it is distributed at no cost. If you feel the same way, please let KBIA know by dropping an e-mail to Kyle Felling - Music Director FellingK@missouri.edu
Carol Goodnick continues to present great Celtic music on KOPN (89.5 FM) Sundays from 3-5 p.m.

The Cottars in St. Louis, June 21
The Cottars, a music group from Cape Breton Canada that includes two sets of siblings age 10 -17 have been raking in Canadian music award for the last two years. They will be playing at The Focal Point in St. Louis on Saturday, June 21. If you intend to go, get tickets asap, as this show will most certainly sell out. These kids are excellent musicians and singers!
