JAM SESSION TONIGHT
TONIGHT (Thursday July 12) -- Local Irish musicians will be playing during Twighlight Festival in front of Cherry Street Artisan, then we'll move inside at 8 pm for the monthly traditional music session and a bit of dancing!
Come on out! Bring the kids, the spouse, the granny, an instrument if ya got one, and as always your smiles and enthusiasm!
Cherry Street Artisan is a smoke-free, family-friendly cafe serving all manner of coffee beverages, juices, imported beers, wines and lovely desserts.
Deirdre and Helen on deck!
Our Summer Arts Program Artists-in-Residence for this year are Deirdre Harnedy and Helen Gubbins. They'll be arriving in Columbia on June 24 -- just in time for the last Twighlight Festival for June. Here's a bit about them:
Deirdre Harnedy is from West Cork, near Bantry in southwestern Ireland and has been playing Irish traditional music on flute, tin whistle and fiddle for 13 years. She particularly appreciates and loves to play the Sliabh Luachra (sleeve loo'-kra) style polkas and slides that are peculiar to southwestern Ireland, and claims a fondness for other "strange local tunes."
Deirdre has just finished her degree at University College Cork in Music and Italian, and will spend another year yet in postgraduate music studies at UCC. When not studying or performing, she teaches private lessons and music classes for the Cork City branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. Her career plans include both teaching and performing professionally.
Helen Gubbins, is a traditional musician from Limerick, Ireland who plays button accordion and piano. She's won numerous medals competing at the All-Ireland music festival over the years and adjudicates competitions herself. Last year she toured the UK as a member of the "Irish Rambling House" ensemble. She teaches private lessons and children's classes and performs regularly in venues around Cork and Limerick.
She, too, has just completed her degree at University College Cork, majoring in Music and Mathematics. Helen has been a Committee member of Irish Traditional music society of UCC which boasts lots of "mighty sessions", maintaining their web site for them, and also participates in the UCC chamber choir and choral society. She's going on to pursuit a graduate degree at UCC in the fall.
While in Columbia, Deirdre and Helen will be teaching classes, of course, but they will also be playing out at venues around Central Missouri as much as possible. They have two Saturday shows (July 12 and Aug 9) and two lunches booked at Cherry Street Artisan, and I'm setting up a variety of other gigs. If you know of a venue or event between Kirksville and Rolla, KC And St. Louis that might be interested in hosting some Irish music this summer, please do let me know! kakers@chivalry.com
Since teaching classes and playing music won't take up ALL their time, they will also be on the lookout for some part time jobs.... Helen said "baby-minding to book-keeping, I'm your woman!" (If you see an accordion player pulling weeds in my garden, you'll know its true!) I have resumes I can share if anyone is looking for some part-time help.

DANCE WORKSHOP, POTLUCK AND CEILIDH, SATURDAY JUNE 28
Beginning and experienced folk dancers and musicians are invited to come out for a great day of music, dance and socializing, and to meet and greet Helen and Deirdre. Christine Harker will teach the dance workshop, starting at 1 p.m. with an hour of instruction just for raw beginners. She'll teach basic footwork (3's, 7s and 3's) and dance elements (advance-retire, swings, etc).
From 2 to 5 pm-ish she'll teach group ceilidh and set dances, starting with very easy ones and getting a bit more complex as we go along.
At 5 we'll feast and later have a mighty session of music and a bit more dancing. We haven't had one of these workshops in more than a year -- far too long considering what a great time they always are.
Location is Hank and Marie's farm near Ashland.
Please sign up if you plan to attend by sending an e-mail to kakers@chivalry.com with the subject DANCE WORKSHOP RESERVATION and I'll send you back directions to the farm.
Suggested donation for this workshop is $7 per adult or a really spectacular dessert! If you aren't into dancing, you are of course welcome to come for the potluck and ceilidh.
Concert and Ceilidh at the Columbia ARC, July 19 7 - 9:30 pm, $7
As a finale for our Irish Arts Week activities July 14-18, we're planning a concert and ceilidh on Saturday July 19. Columbia Parks and Recreation has offered use of the Arc meeting room for this event, and they'll be promoting it on Channel 13 (community info) and to their summer activities participants.
The first hour will be a concert with our artists-in-residence and other Irish Arts week instructors, and the students showing off what they've learned. After a short break, we'll clear the floor and have some music and dancing with easy dances called by Christine Harker. Local musicians are invited to bring instruments and join in.

LOCAL HARPIST BANISHES MISFORTUNE
Central Missouri Melissa Purvis can often be found playing lovely tunes on her Celtic harp at Cherry Street Artisan, Twighlight Festival and other local venues and events. Happily, she has finally recorded some tunes and recently released a CD entitled Banish Misfortune after a jig of the same name.
Melissa plays music during lunch on the third Thursdays of each month. Upcoming dates: June 19, July 17, and Aug 21. She can also be found out at Twighlight Festival for the next two Thursdays. Her CD is available directly from her at any performance.
TEADA IN KANSAS CITY
Irish band teada, who performed in Columbia on February 2 and visited several schools, will be playing at the Kansas City Irish Fest on August 30-31. Other acts on the bill include Solas, Cherish the Ladies, Suicra, The Elders and lots more! This looks to be a great festival.
