CONCERT TONIGHT!
Our summer artists-in-residence, Helen Gubbins (button accordion, vocals) and Deirdre Harnedy (flute, whistle, fiddle), join with local musician Austin Dey (piano, whistle) to perform tonight at Cherry Street Artisan at 8 p.m. The trio have adopted the name "Luck Penny," after both a tune and a long standing Irish custom.
Helen and Deirdre, both traditional music students from University College Cork, have been very busy since arriving in Columbia less than three weeks ago. In addition to preparing for and teaching classes, they've been playing loads of music and practiced together tirelessly with Austin the first week they were here. They even had a couple recording sessions and now have a CD, called Spraoi (spree), with 14 tracks of traditional tunes. How's that for efficient?!

Irish Arts Week Ceilidh - Concert and Dance, Saturday July 19 at the ARC
A week from tonight we'll have a special concert and dance to wrap up our Irish Arts Week events. Columbia Parks and Recreation are co-sponsoring the event, which will be held at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) at the corner of Ash and Clinkscales (see the ARC web site: http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/ParksandRec/ARC/
Helen and Deirdre will be joined by our other Irish Arts Week instructors, Ellie Grace and Christine Harker, and the Irish Arts Week students for a concert with demonstrations of Irish step, ceilidh and set dancing. The concert portion of the evening will be followed by a dance, with a couple easy ceilidh dances taught so everyone can join in!
We're really excited to have a group of 25 enthusiastic young people spending the week learning more about Irish music, dance and culture. The concert will be a great celebration of our first Irish Arts Week!
Keep an eye on the CMCAA web site this week for photos from the day camp and teen workshops, which start Monday.
