SPECIAL EVENT
2:00 - 3:30 p.m., Thursday, January 23, 2003 Jesse Wrench Auditorium, Memorial Union
If you are at all interested in the politics and peace process of Northern Ireland, this will be of interest to you.

“The Theory and Practice of Peace Making” will be the 2003 Monroe-Paine Distinguished Lecture in Public Affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Guest Speaker: The Honorable John Hume, Member of the British and European Union Parliaments & 1998 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient

Dr. John Hume has dedicated his political career to the creation of a lasting peace in Northern Ireland. A longtime leader of the largest nationalist party, the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), Dr. Hume was awarded the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, along with Ulster Unionist Leader David Trimble, for his tireless efforts to build peace and a better life for all the people of Ireland - North and South. He is the only person who has won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Martin Luther King Prize, and the Ghandi Prize. He holds honorary doctorates from over twenty universities around the world, including the University of Missouri.

Dr. Hume first came to prominence through the civil rights movement in the late 1960’s, when Catholics demanded substantial changes to the way Northern Ireland was run. He helped to found the moderate nationalist Social Democratic and Labour Party in 1970, later taking over as its leader in 1979. Dr. Hume was a member of the power-sharing executive set up after the Sunningdale Agreement in December 1973, and helped to shape the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985, which for the first time gave Dublin a limited say in the affairs of Northern Ireland.

Dr. Hume has been a key architect, and a great champion for the political institutions of the European Union, which he views as a model of international conflict resolution.

House Concerts

Here's a link to an interesting article about house concerts, from the Dallas News. http://www.dallasnews.com/dmn/news/stories/121502dnliv1Ahouseconcert.69231.html

The house concerts we've presented in Columbia have been well-attended and thoroughly enjoyable. If you think your house would be a good venue for a house concert and would be interested hosting one, or at least learning more about what's involved, let us know.

Missouri Arts Council -- funding is in jeopardy

Gov. Holden has recommended cutting all general revenue funds for the Missouri Arts Council for FY04. In addition to losing state government funding, this will also result in the loss of $953,000 in federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The federal funding is contingent upon matched state funding.

The Missouri Arts Council, a state agency and division of the Department of Economic Development, provides grants to nonprofit organizations to encourage and stimulate the growth, development and appreciation of the arts in Missouri. Over the past 35 years, the Missouri Arts Council (MAC) has provided vital support and leadership to bring the arts to all the people of the state.

Through funds from the Missouri General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, MAC provides grants to make possible quality arts programming to both large and small communities.

Arts in Columbia have never been stronger than they are right now, and MAC has been a key part of that growth. MAC grant funds support First Night Columbia, The Columbia Art League, The Missouri Theater and Symphony Society, The University Concert Series, TRYPS (Theater Reaching Young People and Schools), Columbia Festival of the Arts.... the list goes on. Whether it's a hundred dollars or thousands, MAC grants help arts organizations of all sizes bring wonderful culture to our community.

You can read more about MAC at http://www.missouriartscouncil.org/

If you feel strongly about maintaining Missouri Arts Council funding, let your state senator or representative know. www.senate.state.mo.us
