Wrap up the summer and welcome in the autumn with a great evening of fun and music!

Luck Penny, the Irish traditional band that formed early this summer with our artists-in-residence Deirdre Harnedy and Helen Gubbins, along with local musician Austin Dey will play a full length concert Friday night of traditional tunes and songs from Ireland. In the spirit of The Chieftains, they've gathered some special guests to join them for your musical delectation. Here's a bit about their guests

Tim Langen, exceptional fiddler and professor of Russian language at MU, came to Columbia a few years ago from Chicago, where he played regularly with folks like Liz Carroll and Larry Nugent. He learned Irish fiddle from his grandfather and carries a seemingly bottomless wealth of tunes in his head.

Brian Hart grew up in St. Louis and participated in the St. Louis Irish Arts program (www.slia.org), learning traditional singing and button accordion. Since then he's studied singing and Irish language in Ireland and completed his undergraduate degree at University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin. Since 2001 he's been performing with the highly acclaimed Milwaukee-based band Anam Ri. (Anam Ri performed at First Night Columbia on this past New Years' Eve.) Last August Brian competed in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and became the first American and youngest person in the history of the Fleadh Cheoil to win the senior level ballad singing competition. Over the summer he's been in Connemara studying Irish language very intensely and in the fall he starts his Masters degree in traditional music performance at University of Limerick.

If Brian hadn't succumbed to homesickness and returned from Ireland in time for the Milwaukee Irish Fest, he would probably be competing again in the Fleadh this weekend. But, to our great good fortune, he's home for a few weeks and has agreed to come sing with Luck Penny Friday evening!
