Deirdre Harnedy is from West Cork, near Bantry in southwestern Ireland and has been playing Irish traditional music on flute, tin whistle and fiddle for 16 years. She particularly appreciates and loves to play the Sliabh Luachra (shleeve loo'-kra) style polkas and slides that are peculiar to southwestern Ireland, and claims a fondness for other "strange local tunes."
Deirdre is a 2005 graduate of University College Cork in Music and Italian. She has been teaching music for the Cork City branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann for several years, and since graduating has been teaching music in public schools as well.
Deirdre is no stranger to Columbia; she was our summer artist-in-residence from June 2003 to June 2004, teaching traditional music and Irish language to many students in mid-Missouri.
