Irish Arts Camp - July 26-30, 2004
(dates have been changed this was previously scheduled for June 14-18)
For ages 5 - 18; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day

This is the second year for our Irish Arts Camp, and it will be EVEN BETTER than last year! There just wasn't enough time last year to fit in all that we wanted to do, so we've made it a full-day, week-long program.

Topics: Three types of Irish dancing: step, sean nós and social; Folk instrument sampler; Irish singing; Fiddle; Tin whistle; Irish language; Irish writers and poets; Irish history; All about Ireland; and mini-concerts. We'll have a ceili Friday evening, June 18 to celebrate the week and share what we've learned.

We will have kids aged 5 - 18 with us all day, but they will be in small groups by age and the instructors will use age-appropriate materials with the groups.  The registration limit for the week is 40 students, so please register early.

There is a half-day option for kids 5 - 12.

We begin searching for candidates in January and one one is selected, we arrange and pay for their US work visa and plane fare.  We provide host housing

Úna ni Fhlannagáin
In Columbia June 4 - August 18, 2004
Harp, fiddle, whistle, Irish language, sean nos singing

Coming from Co. Galway, Ireland, Úna is an accomplished young Irish harpist and experienced Irish traditional musician. Currently studying music at University College Cork, her style is rooted in diverse musical influences such as the dance music tradition of East Clare, the sean-nós singing style of Connemara, and the music of the ancient harpers. A  Galway and Connacht champion, she’s in demand as a performer at high-profile events and has played for such notable dignitaries as the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, the Jamaican Prime Minister, and internationally-renowned artists Pauline Bewick and John Behan. A fluent Irish speaker, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, she’ll be teaching for the summer before going to Wesleyan University, Connecticut, on a prestigious exchange program to study experimental composition and jazz.

Helen Gubbins
Helen, also a UCC student, was one of our 2003 artists-in-residence for the summer, was here for two months this spring and will return in July to teach for another month.  She is a talented button accordion player, fine whistle player and singer.
